Naloxone + Fentanyl Test Strip Training

Addiction Information and Mangement Strategies (AIMS), in partnership with the Opioid Overdose Prevention Program at Columbia Health offer naloxone and fentanyl test strip training and distribution to CUIMC students, faculty, and staff.

Naloxone is a medication designed to rapidly reverse opioid overdose. It is an opioid antagonist that binds to opioid receptors and can reverse and block the effects of other opioids. Naloxone can quickly restore normal respiration to a person whose breathing has slowed or stopped as a result of opioid overdose. Columbia students have already used this life-saving medication to reverse opioid overdoses throughout New York City: Columbia News: Opioid Avengers: Columbia Students Save Four Lives With Naloxone.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid 50-100 times more potent than heroin and is present in three-quarters of all overdose deaths in NYC. Fentanyl is often present in non-opioid substances such as cocaine, methamphetamine, ketamine and pills from non-pharmaceutical sources. Fentanyl test strips can detect the presence of fentanyl quickly and easily.
